At the age of five, she relocated to St. Louis and graduated from Hazelwood Senior High School. Capshaw was a graduate of the University of Missouri with a degree in education. She was also a part of Alpha Delta Pi. She taught Special Education at Southern Boone High School in Ashland, Missouri, and Rock Bridge High School in Columbia, Missouri.
